Clinical Experience.

Intensive Care

I currently work on an 8 bedded general Paediatric Intensive Care Unit admitting 450 children each year. We see a wide range of cases including trauma, general surgery and severe infections. Our hospital provides regional paediatric sub-specialty skills in oncology , neurology, endocrinology and diabetes and neonatology. Paediatric orthopaedics, urology, general surgery are also provided.
I have an active regional role in the provision of intensive care and have been responsible for regional reports on intensive care and the establishment of regional audit. I have also set up a retrieval service for critically ill children which operates throughout East Anglia.

Respiratory

My background in paediatric respiratory medicine has meant that I have a major responsibility with a colleague, Dr Richard Iles, for the clinical care of children with respiratory disease outside the first few years of life.

Cystic Fibrosis
I look 50 children with cystic fibrosis from Cambridge and the surrounding districts. Since taking over the care of these patients I have organised a multidisciplinary CF clinic that is run with physiotherapy. dietetic and social work support.

Asthma
I have also established a dedicated respiratory clinic in which the bulk of the work relates to severe asthma. This clinic is run jointly with a respiratory nurse. An adolescent asthma clinic run with the adult physicians is also being developed. As from August 1996 we have been running a separate clinic with dermatological, immunological and ENT input providing a comprehensive atopy service.

Legal experience:

I have written around 50 reports over the last 5 years, mostly relating to paediatric intensive care.

My major experiencxe is in paediatrics, especially intensive care and respiratory conditions.  Although I have experience of non-accidental injury, this is not an area in which I usually advise, except where it relates to intensive care.
