Emeritus Professor of Clinical Virology, Guy’s, King’s & St Thomas’ School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Professor of Clinical Virology and Honorary Consultant Virologist at above Medical School and at Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Trust up to 1999.

Medical Legal experience:
Providing expert reports for Plaintiff and Defendant since 1985.
Attendance at Case Conferences and occasionally in Court.
Attended courses run by Bond Solan

Clinical responsibilities:
Responsible for providing a clinical service for patients at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital until retirement. 

Research:
Numerous research grants from the major Charitable Organisations and the Research Councils, since first appointed at St Thomas’ (e.g. Medical Research Council, Wellcome Trust, Action Research, British Heart Foundation, Department of Health etc.).

Particular clinical and research interests include:
Intrauterine and perinatal virus infections
Blood borne viral infections (hepatitis B and C, and HIV)
Hospital acquired viral infections
Viral encephalitis
Vaccination against viral infections
Enteric viral infections (including viral diarrhoea, enteroviruses)
Hepatitis A
Chronic fatigue syndrome
Viral respiratory infections

Previous appointments include:
Medical Defence Union, appointed member of Council and Cases Committee, Chairman of Medical Advisory Committee, St Thomas’ Hospital and Chairman of District Management Team.  Registrar and Vice President of Royal College of Pathologists.  Chairman Department of Health Advisory Committee on Hepatitis, Chairman MRC Sub-Committee on Mumps, Measles and Rubella, Public Health Laboratory Service Member of the Board. Civilian Consultant in Microbiology to the Army.
University of London Member of Senate and various University committees.
Clinical Pathology Accreditation Board.
MoD Member of independent panel on Vaccine Interactions Research.

Teaching responsibilities:
Responsible for organising and teaching virology to undergraduate medical students at GKT. Lecturing on numerous postgraduate courses, including MRCOG. 
Examiner for various Medical Schools in the UK and abroad, in pathology/microbiology.
Examiner for Higher Degrees various universities in the UK.
Various invited lectures in the UK and abroad, including USA, Germany, University of the West Indies, Sri Lanka and India

Publications:
About 350 publications in peer reviewed journals.
About 50 editorials in such journals as the BMJ and Lancet.
Various chapters in textbooks
Co-Editor of Principles & Practice of Clinical Virology, Editions 1-5.

Since retirement have continued with research (viral hepatitis), continue to give invited lectures (at home and abroad) and continue to publish in general and specialist journals as well as in books.  Medical legal cases – continue with expert reports.
